I found an interesting article that takes us back to the beginning of our studies with regards Pre-Historic art/architecture. Believed to be Stonehenge’s possible sister site, the Swedish megalith known as Ales Stenar (“Ale’s Stones”), was assembled about 1,000 years ago, near the end of the Iron Age, as a burial monument. Recently however research has been done suggesting that the structure may actually be older; in fact, the structure is thought to possibly be 1500 years older than was previously thought, dating back to the Scandinavian Bronze Age. It is argued that the megalith’s function served as an astronomical calendar, organized in a similar fashion to that of Stonehenge in the UK in terms of its design.
